Re: Am I alone in having so much trouble following Jack & Beanstalk tutorial?

Hi, Jack and the Beanstalk was one of the first things I did when starting to learn Adrift. I remember it being harder and more time-consuming than I had expected, but eventually I got everything working. (I was especially proud of the beanstalk-growing event.) I have gotten to know and love Adrift ...

Re: Annual IF Comp 2020

But the SHOOT issue mentioned in the review isn't due to bugs in ADRIFT or the Standard Library. Issues like the SHOOT issue will always occur when the author does not implement new verbs as intended. I know it can be more work, but it makes the game much more user-friendly. To implement a verb lik...

Praytell, where does one find such an improbable beast? I have quested through the lands of Agtaruth and dived the sunken caverns of Dra'uul. Ne'er have I laid eyes on such a thing you mention.

Re: Climb Tree

Hi Rovarsson, Sorry to hear about your computer, it's happened to us all! Here's another idea - send your game to a friend to keep a backup copy in case of problems. :) None shall see my preciousss until I have polished it so brilliantly it shines their eyes out. (Or when I have to send it out for ...

Re: Climb Tree

Long time no post. The diagnosis from the computerdoctor is in: a powersurge in combination with dustspecks has short-circuited the motherboard. Most raw data can be recovered and transplanted into a new device; all apps and installed software will have to be downloaded anew though. Guess who didn't...

Re: Opinions please!

"Anchorhead" by Michael Gentry went pretty far with this sort of thing. Using an object in your possession made you automatically take it out of the container ( "after taking the lantern out of your coat pocket" ), and going North through a locked door automatically checked if you had the right key,...

Re: Handling greeting NPCs when player enters/exits... (solv

I know it is already solved, but I just got curious and made a quick demo since you mentioned that you couldn't get it to work using two "player movement" overrides. That is definitely possible, but it can be made a bit simpler using "run before" for saying goodbye and "run after" for saying hello ...

Re: Crazy idea?

I was just throwing ideas around. As for the actual programming of the game; count me out. I enjoy reading/playing IF, but I'm still a newbie trying to get a first grand idea off the ground, learning while I go. Still, I keep having the impression that your game-idea needs a Dictator to keep things ...

Re: Climb Tree

Covid lockdown gave me lots of computer-time. Great. Then... I have just been on a week-long camping vacation. I had a notebook an a pen. Wonderful things happened. When I am writing descriptions and scenes at the computer, I'm thinking about all the commands and tasks and restrictions that will fol...

Re: Crazy idea?

No. Not such a crazy idea. A whole bunch of authors contributed to "Cragne Manor." If I understand correctly, that game had a few people in charge who delegated one room/location to each author. That means hobbledyboogledy-gameplay kept together by a masterplan. I've tried it several times, and it i...

Re: Just a fairy tale

Is anything different about the game after you get sent back to square one? New background-story, tweaked puzzles, anything like that that would make it worthwhile to go again? If not, this is just sudden death with extra annoyance: UNDO and continue on the other path. Without UNDO (and noticable ch...

Re: Climb Tree

Aaargh! Washability bites! So I have an item that needs washing before PC is able to use it. Now I wouldn't want to let the player to be only able to WASH RHINOCEROS HORN in the washing basin by the spring when there is a perfectly good lake only two locations away. (Something I have encountered mor...

Re: IFComp 2020

Since The Tree (working title) will be a lot longer than 2 hours playing time and looking at my rate of progress in the past six months, I'm aiming for Spring Thing 2021.

Re: Climb Tree

Hi all! Maybe I'm going ahead with the writing and programming too fast. I haven't tested anything since the inn and I'm still going forward with writing new locations and implementing new objects, tasks, characters and actions. Am I setting myself up for tons of problemfixing once I do test, or do ...
