Re: Combined Library Release 2.1 Out

No protests from the Great South Land either. I never encountered 2 spaces between sentences in over 60 years. Now double spacing between lines was something that typewriting required to make things more readable. Again, I know of no rule that states that there should be two spaces between lines. I...

Re: Combined Library Release 2.1 Out

I think I once read in a post that there should sometimes be two spaces between sentences according to English (UK-English?) rules. If anybody knows about this, please comment. I can state quite categorically that there is no such rule that there should be two spaces between sentences. If you look ...

Re: Decreasing a variable gives weird result

One trick I use if I have a problem with a variable is to (saving your gamefile first) try to delete that variable completely. The developer should then generate a pop-up listing all the tasks that variable is referenced in - you may have inadvertantly referenced the variable in another task which i...

Re: Object controlled by a variable

I have prepared a small demo to show one way of doing this using the minimum number of alternative descriptions. I dare say that one of the more knowledgeable Drifters might come up with something more slick, but at least this works!

I hope it helps.

Re: examining held object

Hi Denk, The command line for the "examine objects" general task is at present [examine/exam/ex/x/look {at/in{side}/under}] %object% . IMHO this is wrong. As it is, the player can type LOOK object (not correct English anyway), LOOK AT object, LOOK IN(SIDE) object and LOOK UNDER object and get the sa...

Re: Annual IF Comp 2020

Ditto. :haha: At least I wasn't last. Now the challenge, for me, is to produce a small game that could completed in an hour or two with commands that these modern erks won't have any trouble with! They obviously don't like having to actually THINK about the solution to a puzzle. Did you do the surv...

Re: Annual IF Comp 2020

Thanks for the update, Denk. :thanks: I guess 84th place out of 103 isn't all that bad. I would have liked seeing an (any) Adrift game higher on the scoring list, though. I'm not unhappy by the place, though. The most important thing is that my game was played, and I got some nice reviews. :D Hopef...

Re: Combined Library Release 2 Finally Out

The correct phrases, as P/o states, are "You move TO port/starboard." and "You move Forward/Aft". You can say "You move TO THE north, etc,." but not "You move TO north." and neither would you say "You move TO THE port/starboard/forward/aft."

Yes, English can be a strange language!

Re: Adrift virus warnings

Great idea. I occasionally get virus warnings from Windows Defender when I try to run the ADRIFT developer. Each time I have told Defender to run the developer anyway and it is OK for a while.
