Mono version NOT working (Linux and Mac)

Post by Denk »

Hi Campbell,

Please take down the Mono-version. It isn't working and hasn't been working for a long time. So many have reported this and no one have had success.

Dan Fabulich has documented quite thoroughly what wasn't working on Linux (Ubuntu) here: https://intfiction.org/t/adrift-for-mac/47057/8

The Runner gave several errors but it managed to launch. But when he tried to open a game, he just got error messages. He tried with two games.

I don't think a Mono-version should be available unless it has been tested with success on at least one system.

I was able to run the Mono build from source on Windows.

I guess testing it on Windows is a minimum requirement. But if it doesn't work on Linux and Mac there is no reason to make it available, which gives the impression that it works on those platforms. Perhaps it can be made to work under some situations, but the requirements should be mentioned. As it is now, a lot of people have tried to make it work without luck. That isn't good for ADRIFT's image.

Out of curiosity, which game(s) did you test on Windows? The errors for Skybreak and Six Silver Bullets were so different that I suspect that it might work on some game or other.

One more person has just reported on intfiction.org that he had problems similar to what dfabulich has reported:

Just saw that thread, it's rare for ADRIFT to get a mention over there so that's unfortunate. Glad you were able to clarify that the online version works now at least.

I'm actually not aware of anyone who's gotten the Linux version working, and I don't think any of Theo's techy friends could either. Can we get some confirmation that it works at all? Might be better to just remove the link altogether if it doesn't.
