IMPORTANT when changing libraries

Post by Denk »

IMPORTANT (think this needs its own thread):
I think this has been said before, but be careful when you play around with libraries. You can ruin old games if you don't do it correctly.

Thus always make a backup before you try to update the standard library in a game. If you do not intend to update the standard library in a game, you must untick libraries, otherwise, ADRIFT will auto-update the library files, which might ruin your game!

This is not a bug in any library but it is the way ADRIFT works, i.e. it auto-updates library files, even if you choose "No" to update old library files! (at least when you in Settings have chosen "Prompt per library")

So I always recommend that you untick all libraries when loading a game into the Developer. Only apply libraries when you create new games. You are of course welcome to update the library in an old game but please make a backup first and check thoroughly if everything works as intended.

So should the library setting be "Never Overwrite"?

Probably a good idea.

Unfortunately, you will then have to change that setting each time you create a new game from scratch. Or you could just import the library you want, using the Import feature.

So when importing a library what happens to the default standard library or do we first uncheck Standard Library?

Yes, as the Combined Library is a replacement for the Standard Library, no library should be loaded when you import the Combined Library.

But note, first you must untick all libraries, then click OK, and then select NEW in the file menu, so you get a clean taf-file with no libraries. First then can you import the Combined Library. Note that the time and money libraries can first be loaded AFTER loading a standard library, e.g. the Combined library.

I assume that if you have started a new game using the StandardLibrary, you cannot then replace that with the Combined Library? Is there a way to fix that if you have started a new game with the standardLibrary?

This is getting complicated! :haha:

* Please make a backup of your game before attempting this!
* EDIT: This seems to work no matter if you imported the library or if you chose the library under Settings->Libraries

Here goes:
1. Under Settings->Libraries set "When loading a newer library item than in the current adventure:" to "Prompt per item" (NOT per library!)
2. Deselect all libraries and select the Combined Library.
3. Reload your game and say yes to update all modified tasks

Please note:
* I cannot guarantee there won't be problems - please test the game before continuing.
* The Inventory task might have to be copied into your game manually if you are using Release 1 (should be fixed in Release 2)
* I expect to have a new version of Combined Library soon.
