Newbie Question #2: How to divide long sections of text?

Postby JamesTBond » Fri Feb 10, 2017 2:55 am

I have seen some authors avoid the big wall of text by dividing longer sections of the story into shorter passages, and the player can hit a key to read the next passage. Anyone happen to know how to set up such a system for a conversation or certain tasks? Or do you know what tricks they might be using?

Use the <waitkey> tag to wait for a keypress.
If your textbox contains this:
adrift Code: Select all
Press any key<waitkey>
This is next<waitkey>
This is last

Then "Press any key" will be displayed and ADRIFT will wait for the player to press a key before displaying "This is next".
After they press a second key the "This is last" bit will be shown.

Personally, I like to indicate that there's more coming with a small indicator. I use an ellipsis mark, like this:

...<waitkey>

By the way, I do personally thing it is a very good idea to break up larger blocks of text.
