Trouble installing V5

Postby Christinamari » Sat Feb 29, 2020 6:24 pm

I'm trying to install ADRIFT (full install) on a brand new PC, Windows 10, latest version of .NET (4.8) installed. It won't install because it says it needs V2.0. I've searched the forum and I've seen other's with the same problem, but they either fix it in a way that doesn't work from me, or the messages seem to peter out without a solution. I've tried restarting, re-downloading, using the UK mirror, and it still gives me the error. Can anyone help? Thanks!

When you say "but they fix it in a way that doesn't work for me.." do you mean you have tried to download and install .net v2 and that didn't work? did you do a reboot of PC after installing v2? (I'm sure you did, but no harm in asking).

Do you have a screenshot or can tell us what the error message said exactly when trying to run Adrift?

Is there a way to verify you have a clean install of Win 10?

I cant think of what else to suggest trying.

I tried restarting after downloading the Install package (which is what I thought someone else tried, but I may have misunderstood). I already have V2, V3, and V4 updates of .NET on my PC - do I need to somehow install V2 separately? Here's a screenshot of the message that appears: Image - I'm not sure if this is going to work, as I can't seem to upload an image so this is a link to an image in Google images.

Ok, that image thing didn't work. The error says exactly Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 needs to be installed for this installation to continue. If I click OK, then the install aborts.
I don't know what you mean about a clean install. I got a new laptop and Win 10 was already installed.

As I understand it, the latest version of ADRIFT actually runs on .NET V4, so I should be ok.

From my understanding you still need to install .Net V2 as parts of Adrift was coded for it, and .Net 2 and 4 can co-exist on your PC I believe.

Ok, that worked - hurrah! Thank you for the advice. Unfortunately my virus software detected (or thinks it detected) malware somewhere in the files after installation so I seem to have only got the runner and not the generator. Persisting with a new install!

Aaaand, removing the offending "trojan" from Quarantine has fixed it. All good. :-D

I've never run into that with Malwarebytes but I've heard it's a common problem with certain antivirus programs. Basically it just sees that its not a commonly downloaded .exe and that it can launch other files and freaks out, or at least that's how I've had it explained.

Yes that was it exactly. It called it a trojan by default, annoyingly.
