Overriding character conversation system?

Postby rovarsson » Sat Mar 21, 2020 7:23 am

Hi all!

I'm creating a conversation with my main NPC in "The Tree". I'm using the conversation tab in the character box. I find it neat and tidy, easy to keep order with all the topics in the character box instead of in a separate task folder. However, obviously I want to add a response to unimportant stuff the player might ask about. "Bob picks his nose and studies his finger. He hasn't heard you." A task 'Ask Bob about %text%' always runs before any responses to important topics in the conversation tab, so even ASK BOB ABOUT IMPORTANT MAGIC OBJECT gives the above response. Anyone know of a way to keep the unimportant response without converting all the topics to separate ASK-tasks?

Thanks.

How to make such a "default" message when using the conversation tab as well as when using tasks, is explained in this thread:

If something is not clear, just ask.

Just want to add that making a text override is quicker and possible in most cases. Note that text overrides can contain alternative descriptions too.
adrift Code: Select all
EXAMPLE:

Living room
John is here.

> ask about blab
(John)
He doesn't appear to understand you.

> g
(ask about blab)
John doesn't appear to understand you.

>restart

> say blab
(to John)
He ignores you.

> g
(say blab)
John ignores you.

In the above example you can text override "He doesn't appear to understand you." etc. If there are more male NPC's it may be needed to apply restrictions.
