Livingroom / living room ... Why?

Postby Po. Prune » Sat Oct 08, 2011 3:18 pm

Is there any reason why the word Living room is divided into two words while Bedroom is not?
I get a spelling error when I run the word livingroom through the text editor (English - UK) and it suggests splitting the word.

I would spell it as a single word.

I've always seen it as two words.

I think it is one of the quirks of the English language.

I have never seen "living room" spelt as one word, and I cannot recall ever seeing bedroom spelt as "bed room"!

This is really a perfect question. As here in Australia where we use the British English, we use the bedroom. And another one word is bed linen and bedlinen. Both ways to use, why?

Upstairs we have the Living Room, downstairs is the Family Room. I suppose it definitely beats having a Dying Room. :P
