JUDGING "Dish Duty" by Duncan Bowsman

INTROCOMP AIM
The challenge is to come up with a brilliant beginning to an Adrift game that is in a working playable form. This must really make the player want to actually continue with the rest of the game, if it existed. So, it is a competition for games that are just an introduction using no more than 3 locations and is all about good writing rather than loads of actions/puzzles.

JUDGING
Judges should play the games from the zip file located at The Adventure Demos section on the Adrift site and then mark them in the poll for that game. Be careful not to get it wrong as you cannot take a vote back. Entries should be judged on the basis of how much they draw you into wanting to play the full game, but the mark should also reflect how well you believe the game fits in with the spirit and rules of the event.

Judging ends in two weeks at 5PM BST on Sunday 14th June 2009 after which the winner will be acclaimed based on the aggregate of votes cast in the game poll.

Looks like there's a duplicate of the game in the competition .zip... however, having looked at them, they both appear to be up-to-date versions, and not the other I'd sent in so soon after the announcement of the comp.

I found this game kinda creepy, but in a very good way. The psychological twist is well done. I found myself going back and trying to see what else was and wasn't real. Trying to find clues about the context of the story in room descriptions and other details. The wife talking to me but not really to me was a nice touch too.

Although, perhaps I have found a bug. In the beginning, when the wife asks you a question, you have the option of responding yes or no (Y/N) but when I type N, the game interprets that as north and I head north. Is this by design? :D

Anyhow, I really enjoyed this one :D

It will auto-complete as "north," but backspacing/entering just "No" or "N" ought to get a different response.

I felt it was almost unfair, and yet something drew me to keep going back through it until I felt I'd done all that I could attempt to do... :)

Maybe this is supposed to be some kind of clever surreal adventure... to me it's just awful LOL, you can't x anything, or do anything, basic commands do not work... for no apparent reason? No idea what "No such thing" is supposed to mean.

It's all too surreal for me I'm afraid. If Surreal is the right word?

Dish Duty

An interesting entry, and arguably the only one that could be considered a 'true' introduction. The demo ends with, what I happen to know, is the title page and a hint at the real direction that the game is going to go in. Having a little bit of insider knowledge really helps, because I think that this could be something really special but I wonder if the uninformed would be bemused and turned-off by the seeming nonsensical turn of events and confused implementation.

It probably succeeds the most in leaving the player wanting something more, but what else can be said about it? The struggle of the protagonist to interact with his world is the whole point, so I can't rag on it for poor implementation. The same can be said about the confusing interaction with your significant other, or the seeming random interjections from your own subconscious. This is the entry that will probably see the wildest swings of scores, and I think that says something about it. As it stands, it's not quite enough information and purpose to draw the player in, but it certainly promises something - no doubt about that.

I'm at a loss what else to add about this game. I'd probably be unimpressed if I didn't know what kind of thing DB was looking for. As I do have an inkling, I can be a bit more generous and say that I'm looking forward to this one. Here's hoping that it sees the light of day...
