Linux Runner

Post by Campbell »

I am working on a native Linux version of Runner. This has major advantages over the v4 clones in that games will run exactly the same on Windows and Linux, plus Linux users get the extra features such as autocomplete and the map. It should be a fairly easy step to get this working on Mac OSX too.

Is there any chance for an ARM port?

Desktop or phone? Either way, it may be possible eventually, altho probably not for a while as it requires specific ARM coding.

If you released the source for the runner there might be a person or community that would be able to do it.

Unfortunately no, I'm cr*p at that sort of thing HOWEVER I know a couple of people who may find it an interesting system to port.

Ok. In case anyone here has Linux, I'd be grateful if you could give this a try and see if it works:

http://www.adrift.org.uk/ftp/adrift-5.0.18pre.tar.gz

If it's any more of an incentive, this is the latest version of the code, i.e. 5.0.18.

I'll ask around, see who wants to give it a shot.

Got this running under Mint. No real issues with your demos. However games that don't use the standard library mess up badly. How do user libraries work?

Apologies for the delay in responding, linux is not a favourite in my houshold (it doesn't run the kids games).

I don't know if the error is with the linux version or 5.0.18 in general. When I run my v5 adventure.taf or zork.taf (both v5.0.15) the runner crashes when I attempt an inventory.

A couple of other things:
The centre map lock and player location lock buttons are missing.
When you select a previous command, the command line is corrupted, the command works ok though.

Campbell; THANK GOD! I've now been using PCLinuxOS for three months wondering when I could get Crystal Caverns (1983) by Hayden done! What WONDERFUL NEWS! You can bet I'll send this info along to the folks at PCLinuxOS forums. If you're interested, I can post about this for you. I'll NEVER go back to Winblows; I couldn't take the crashes and re-installations every two weeks. Once you get this runner done PLEASE email me. I can't wait to finish Crystal Caverns! You've made this entire change to linux worth it. Thank you!

Hope i haven't missed the 5.0 version of ADRIFT. I'm sure I have since I've been gone for so long. Hope I am still registered. Anyway, if you have a tarball for PCLinuxOS (Linux) let me know; I'll be glad to test it for you at anytime. SO GLAD you're doing this. Nice to see Linux being treated with respect, but hope my labors using Windows' version will work with a transfer from the windows version.

Again, let me know; I frequent the PCLinuxOS forums daily and you can find me there are billy7720. Contact me whenever you wish. Hope to hear from you....

Sincerely;
billy7720

Campbell thanks!

I recently downloaded mono from the PCLinuxOS repos so I have that installed as well even though it's 60MB.

I'll try my best to get this to run over the weekend and let you know how it works asap. Thanks again for considering the Linux group of folks. We all appreciate this very much.

I would like permission to allow PCLinuxOS community to allow the FREE version to be uploaded to the repos at PCLinuxOS.com - let me know. If so, I'll ask them to add it to the package manager for others to try before they buy. I am a registered member and will back you up 100%. Count on it. Otherwise, I will send a link to here so others can see what they can do with your amazing program. Either way, let me know.

Thank you again. You've made my day :)

Sincerely;
billy7720

I have not been able to get this to run whatsoever. It's my fault somewhere I'm sure.

But is there anyway to make this "java" based? Would make it a TON more easier to deal with and use. Let me know. I would love to finish "Crystal Caverns" for Linux.

So far no dice here.
