Has anyone come up with a method to have an interactive screen within a game.

I'm looking to put in a computer screen that the player can interact with, type commands etc. but i dont want them to have to enter something like, "Type search database" to have it search the database :)

Anyone have any ideas where to start?

Follow the link, and at the bottom of the page look for:

Download dbaa!(intro).zip from Delron

You can either click on the dbaa, or on the Delron (which will take you to Rotter's webpage where you can get the game.

Good Luck

Hm... that's curious. Well, here is the link to the competition that game was in. You should be able to find it in there.

24 rooms? Why not just have the computer display be a single room?

Because i want the player to "see" the computer screen when they look at it and so when they type they are using the computer within the game without having to "type" every command...

Isnt that how you did it, Duncan, in the Dung beetles are aliens ??

Sorry, I forgot the file was password'd. Anyway, MAWINDEX is one room. A series of variables control the output... for example, if the main screen is up, main = 1 and mailbox = 0. But then if the player types >M, it will change main to 0 and mailbox to 1. Selecting a mail message changes mailbox to another variable.

... that was basically how it was done. If it sounds too complex or anything, lemme know and I can PM you the password for the intro so you can have a look under the hood.

Ahh, i see :oh-no:

I initially thought about using variables to control which "screen" is seen, but i didnt then want to swamp my .alr file with the different text blocks.

Oh well, i've nearly finished it now :) :haha:

If you want to see what i've done so far, let me know and i'll put it on here.
