Problem with comdlg32.ocx file

This forum is the place to discuss the older ADRIFT versions 3.9 and 4.0.

Please refer to the ADRIFT 4 Manual for more information.

Hi all,

Can anyone help? I installed ADRIFT 4 and registered it. I just found the registration bit in the Help section and entered the details I was sent by email. It came up with an error message about a comdlg32.ocx file, now I cannot run the generator.

Should I uninstall ADRIFT and start again?

It's not an ADRIFT problem, but a windows problem. This file is an ActiveX Control. Download the file and install it. Get the file here:

zip file

Extract the file comdlg32.ocx to C:\Windows\System32

Go to Start, Run (or hit windows + R) and enter the following:

regsvr32 %Systemroot%\System32\comdlg32.ocx

That registers the file with windows registry. You should get a message about the file being successfully registered. If you get a message that the file can't be found, make sure you have extracted to the right spot. This should be the same place on XP, Vista, or 7.

Who knows why this file is gone, or even why you need it. But this should fix it.

Hi,
OCX - an Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) custom control.
An OCX is an Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) custom control, a special-purpose program that can be created for use by applications running on Microsoft's Windows systems. OCXs provide such functions as handling scroll bar movement and window resizing.

Hi,

Thanks for replying. I have done what you say above, but the error message keeps coming up, one of the error messages says "Run-time error 339".

Many thanks,

Larry.

Hi Larry,

First try reboot your computer - just in case it will now work :)

If not then refer to:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/comdlg32.htm

and follow steps given.

Cheers,

Hi catman,

Thanks for your help. Did what you said, I even deleted the file, re-copied it into System32 and registered it successfully, but it still crashes out.

I get a "User Account Control" message, "Do you want to allow the following program from an unknown publisher to make changes to this computer?" If I click on yes, the ADRIFT logo appears but then the two error dialogue boxes appear behind it.

I was trying to register the Generator, I remember I clicked on "Run as Administrator" and this all started!

OK. One thing you could try is to go to the ADRIFT folder and right click on the generator.exe icon (gen400.exe)and select
Properties---->Compatibility tab
and where it says "run this program in compatibility mode" choose "WindowsXP (Service Pack 2)" and click APPLY....
If not I cannot help you further - but someone else may be able to do so.

EDIT: Also I found some more info regarding Windows 7 here:

Hi catman,

I fixed it - did a system restore, deleted ADRIFT folder and re-installed. Now the generator works.

That's good news!
Right I'm off for a brew...

I'm standing outside the door, to the west, of the "Dragonslayer's Arms" Inn, which stands on the northwest side of Hengemire village green. Paths lead off south & east.
