Correct phrase?

Postby P/o Prune » Sat Mar 04, 2017 2:45 pm

English not being my first language I want to make sure that I use the right term in my game.
The player has an old lantern. What is the correct phrase to light it?
I would think the phrase light lantern is the correct way, but what about turn on lantern, or switch lantern on?
I'm trying to avoid a guess the verb situation here.

Oh, and now that I have your attention. What's the correct phrase for turning off the lantern?

Why not just include every variation in case the player picks a different phrase?

Personally, I'd type "TURN OFF LANTERN". (Also allow "TURN LANTERN OFF", at least so that pronouns work as expected.)

I also suggest "SWITCH LANTERN", which will turn the lantern on or off, as appropriate.

Other phrasings I've seen: "EXTINGUISH LANTERN", "UNLIGHT LANTERN".

Depends on whether your lantern uses batteries or is lit by flame (ie. matches)
For battery power, then Light/Switch/Turn {on} lantern/lamp {on} and similar for turning OFF.
For flame powered, then Light Lantern and Extinguish Lantern make more sense. But other combinations should also be programmed in to catch those possiblities so the player is "not left in the dark" so to speak. (as Ralphmerridew & David said)

Thanks for the replies.
The reason I asked this question is because I felt that Turn off Lantern, switch off lantern suggested that there is a switch to be operated.
Extinguish and unlight are good, but I'll throw in the others too for good measure.

LIGHT and EXTINGUISH are probably the first things I'd try.
