Firstly to reply to the original topic - I don't write IF as I am not a writer. I'm a reader. I have proof read a few games for people in the past and even play tested some. Currently testing an Android game, although, while it is available on the Play Store, the author has currently dropped out as I think I have overloaded him. The game is
Betsy Sykes Mysteries - What's up at The Docks for those that may be interested.
My main interest is converting all the old type-in adventures found in magazines back in the 1980's. (I still have quite a few lying around.) Most are in BASIC designed for various computers of the era(Spectrum, Commodore, TRS80, Acorn and others). So, not only am I translating the BASIC, but attempting to bring the functionality into more modern IF. I have done this in Inform6 when I first came across the language mentioned in a British magazine - PC Plus back around 1999/2000. As well as getting them to work as originally designed, I am also enhancing the descriptions of Locations & Objects as I go.
I also tried some of the earlier versions of Quest, but since Alex left the scene, my interest there has waned considerably, although I still check out what they call Forums from time to time.
Then I moved on to Adrift v5 and have found it to be comprehensive enough for me to convert these listings. I did try v3.9 & v4 earlier but didn't have enough time to really get to grips with them then.
I recently loaded up TADS but have yet to have a proper play with it.
I have come from a self-taught learning background where my employer bought the software and expected us to use it to do everything that the vendors claimed it could because it looked great.
Since retiring a couple of years ago and thinking there would be plenty of time to "get my teeth into these", I didn't take into account my wife who saw it as an opportunity to travel and use me as a taxi service to get to shops that are further afield.
As for the second part of this topic, I would hate to see the Adrift forum moved to somewhere else to disappear amongst the overwhelming plethora of platforms that are now around. (I must admit that I don't know what CYS is for one.)
I would back Po Prune attempting to contact Campbell and obtain Admin rights to this forum at least if not the main site as well so that we could change it to suit current requirements.
As for the AIF board, I wasn't aware that it even existed until I read this post. I went in and fiddled with my profile. (added the day of the month for my birthday and it suddenly appeared) After I deleted it again, it is still showing. Weird that it should require the day to figure out how old I am. The year alone should be all that is required.
Anyway, I look forward to see what becomes of Adrift and the Forum. Also, hopefully Saabie's multi-runner will prove to be a winner too.
