I preferred the films to the books actually. For one thing, they didn't have Tom Bombadull in, surely one of fantasy's naffest characters.

You are *so* wrong there! (unless it was a subjective view).

Bombadil is all powerful (within his own little world) and innocent (hence the silly songs etc) - he is the flip side of Sauron. The epitomy of good which we don't want either.
