Here is your July writing challenge. Remember to read the rules and try to keep the word count down, it's a location description, not part of a story. You have until August 1st. Good Luck!

Location: Grotty Hotel Room
Contains Dirty Bed, Cracked Mirror, Trouser Press, Coffee Pot, Telephone, Bible, Cockroach, locked drawer.

Let me get the ball a rollin'...

When you asked for the economy suite, you had no idea that you would be led down to a secret floor below the cellar. An old, unwashed coffee pot is the only thing supplied for making anything to drink, although the dead rat inside it will ensure that you take frequent trips to the restaurant upstairs. The bed, dirty and beckoning on the grungy sheets your bedfellows the cockroaches, is the first furnishing you notice. Over by the window (its only outdoor feature being the soil beneath the building) is a vanity table with a padlock on the make-up drawer. Its mirror is broken, apparently by an immaculate bible dashed upon the floor, which has small shards around it. The telephone, which looks hurriedly balanced on a greasy trouser press set up in a corner, however, is worse for wear. The base is fissured from some kind of impact, scabbed with old blood and looks unusable.

The lift is back south and your... shudder... bathroom is to the west.

Looks like you could be a winner B.I.J, seeing as you're the only one to enter so far :(

Don't think I haven't thought about it myself :oh-no:

I wonder what I should set as a challenge?

I was waiting for the final results on the June challenge before preparing my entry. One election campaign at a time, or so I theorized. Now I see that our faithful moderator is running the voting down through the end of the month.

Fear not, Master Brain, I will (eventually get around to) defeat(ing) you. ;)

Or, at least, writing something. You know, anything at all. I think it was the "grotty" that threw me out of the saddle. That and mourning the death of the continuity comp. I blame Bush for that one.
I am alive.

(Lurking field deactivates) Well, at least i'm sure to place in the top two.

You thought the room was rather cheap, even for the off-season, however as you look around the room that you were escorted to by a grinning man with greasy hair, you begin to think you may have overpaid for the quality. A bed sits unmade against one corner; a dirt outline on the sheets indicates it’s not been changed in the last decade. A bible supports one of the legs of an archaic trouser press that you suspect is older then you. A small mirror leaning against the wall sits atop a small bureau. Judging from the large crack running almost straight down the mirror you suspect the mirror is not secured to anything. The bureau itself has a single drawer for you to store personnel items, the only problem with it being that it doesn’t fit properly and even from here you can see a bolt holding it firmly in place. The only highlights of the room that you can see include a telephone and a coffee pot. The fact the coffee pot hasn’t got a plug is a minor annoyance; whilst the cockroach perched on the handset of the phone looking back at you is likely to need moving before you use the phone.

Room 2941

You get what you pay for, it appears, and you didn't pay much for this room. The bed is dirty and unmade, the mirror is cracked and chipped, and the trouser press is in pieces on the floor. A small band of cockroaches seems to have colonized the nightstand's open drawer, which also holds a half-eaten bible. The drawers on the dresser are all locked, unfortunately for your clothes. A telephone sits on the nightstand, but doesn't appear to be plugged in. The room's coffee pot doesn't seem to have moving in ten years, and holds what was once coffee but is now brown sludge.

There's a window to the east, in theory, behind the ugly curtains. The bathroom - hopefully - is on the north side of the room. To the south, a door leads back to the hallway.

Could we have a new one please? I liked reading peoples ideas and it's good writing practice. It's a bit offputting to see July mentioned on the main forum too, makes it look a bit dead here!
