Which is better, take a pot, put water to it, let it boil, put eggs to it, wait 12 min, take the pot and pour a water off, cool eggs and eat. - Or just boil the eggs and eat?
Programmers are in a race with the Universe to create bigger and better idiot-proof programs, while
the Universe is trying to create bigger and better idiots. So far the Universe is winning.

Unless you cool the egg down it will be too hot to eat (yes, I have done it).

Isn't 12 minutes a bit too long?

I'd go for the boiling egg and eat. I'm assuming the process of getting pot, water and eggs, and a place to cook, involves other puzzles. That is, you don't just walk into the kitchen and find all those things there. If you've just spent the last 20 minutes (as a player) getting all the components so you can cook the eggs, don't make the player jump though some arbitrary hoop to cook the egg. They have all the components. Just let them cook.

If you walk into the kitchen and all the pieces are there, you *might* contemplate having a multi-step puzzle to cook the egg. To me, it depends on how important cooking the egg is to the game. If it's just a scene-setting sort of thing, just cook the egg. If it's the gateway to the rest of the game and how you cook the egg is of strategic importance, you could consider it. But my feeling would be: cooking an egg is a boring mundane chore in real life. Doing it in an IF setting doesn't suddenly make it fun or interesting.

I agree with phkb. No matter how you look at it, cooking an egg isn't very exciting, so make is as easy and quick as possible.

The fact that the player even figured out that they need to cook an egg could be resolving a puzzle (unless the game explicitly tells them too of course!).

Boil the chicken. Then when she lays the egg, it will already be cooked.
