Directions in IF

Postby P/o Prune » Tue Apr 17, 2012 9:07 am

I just thought of something...
It's good manners in IF if you have a direction going north from one location to another the PC should also be able to go South (unless in a puzzle etc) and get back to the previous location.
But.. What if the PC is standing on a lawn and there's a porch across the lawn to the north. PC goes north across the lawn and ends up on the porch, but would it be ok to have him go Down rather than South in order to get back onto the lawn?

I realize that it's possible to simply have two directions between the two locations, but I'm more interested in what people think about the dilemma. Would you find it ok?

I would set both directions as long as the exit listing didn't list the lawn twice as both south and down. That said, I personally wouldn't consider the elevation change of going onto a porch enough to consider down over south unless the house is on a hill and you make the stairs sound rather tall.

Whether it's two steps or twenty steps, I usually think of "...going down off the porch..." or "...get up on the porch...". So I would add not only the Up/Down directions, but On/Off directions also.
