Releasing game in what format?

Postby P/o Prune » Mon Sep 24, 2012 10:03 am

Son of Camelot is almost ready for release
I'm just curious as to what format to release it in.
A Taf File, A Blorb file or as an .exe file or maybe all three of them? (which will be quite a lot of Mb's)

If I release it as a .Taf file, people can open it in the developer and see how I've done things which may help other drifters.
Releasing it as a .Blorb file means that it can be played online which is cool since it'll reach a wider audience. And isn't that what we all want?
Releasing the game as an .exe file will mean that the player doesn't have to have the runner installed on his/her computer, s/he can play the game whenever s/he wants to without having to be online.

So what to choose?

The only problem with that is - IMHO - the player can cheat by searching for the relevant tasks, etc, for the solution to a puzzle. I know I would! :haha:

I think you have to have ADRIFT installed to be able to play a blorb?

Are there graphics in the game? You might want to wait until Campbell has fixed the graphics issues in the Runner before releasing as an .exe.

Why not have the password to the .taf at the end of the game? Then those who finish it can see how it was made.

Brilliant idea! I didn't realise that is how it works?

If you have sound or graphics in the game then there's not much point releasing as a TAF, as it means you would have to package the sound and graphics together in a ZIP file. And if you want it to be played online and/or on Linux/Mac then an EXE will not be any use. So I would recommend releasing as a BLORB.

As per my earlier reply, I thought you had to have ADRIFT installed to be able to play a blorb?

I'm gonna' sound like a total newb here.... BLORB files are single files that hold the TAF, images and sounds in a single file, right?

Correct. They are a standard IF format, so other Interactive Fiction apps can understand them (i.e. can pull out the title, author, description and cover art etc).

I just tried to export SoC as a Blorb file, but when I click on it on my desk top I get the following message: This Blorb file seems to be invalid
It works ok if the runner is open and I "open adventure" Is this normal?

Is it trying to launch an earlier version of Runner?

I don't know actually. When I start the runner, from my desktop, it's the v.5.25 (15 Sept) release.
How do I find out which runner the blorb is trying to run?

It should say on the Splash screen. Ah - of course it may not display that if you have set your own...

Does Runner actually launch? Can you select Help > About ADRIFT?

Nothing launches. I have the SoC.Blorb icon on my desktop and I click on it. The next thing that happens is that the fault message is displayed.

When launching the runner by itself and then run the blorb file, everything works ok.
Checking help > About ADRIFT when launching the runner shows that I'm running V.5.0.25

Try downloading the latest Setup zip and installing that. I think it's probably just that the blorb is associated with a non-existent file, and the setup should fix that.
