Lately I have been playing...

Postby David Whyld » Mon Jan 30, 2012 10:16 pm

...Anchorhead by Michael Gentry.

After many, many years of deciding that I should play this game - which is, after all, widely regarded as one of the best IF games ever written - I went ahead and downloaded it ready to see if it lives up to the hype.

Has anyone else played it? Does it live up to the hype? Is its status as a masterpiece justly earned?

I've had Anchorhead recommended to me many times since I'm a huge Lovecraft hipster/fan boy, but I've never played through the whole thing. Every time I've played (which is several times now), I find that the opening is intriguing, but then I get lost trying to find the house my character is supposed to move into (shouldn't she know where it is?), wander around clueless for about an hour, lose steam, quit. I might try playing through with a walkthrough at some point. Having a map might also help.

The writing was good, but the adventurecraft ran me into a big wall early on. My impressions were "meh."

Anyone else been playing any IF games lately? ADRIFT or otherwise? Feel free to discuss them here. It'd be nice to see what games people are playing.

Not to make your head any bigger, but I've been playing Back To Life... Unfortunately a fair bit recently.

As we've discussed on another thread, my most recently played game was The Hobbit. I also replayed 9:05 recently, as well as Back Home and Unraveling God.

I played The Meteor, The Stone, and a Long Glass of Sherbert fairly recently, mainly because it was on my old notebook for some reason while I was stuck at my grandparent's house for several days with no internet. I don't remember when or why I downloaded it in the first place but it was pretty good.

On my to-do list right now is Return to Camelot and Back Home.

Necroing threads is fun! :)

e: Also maaaybe it's nostalgia talking but Anchorhead is the best game. Play with a walkthrough handy if you have to, the experience is worth it either way.
Currently working on: Open World. Choose your path. Be a hero! Or an alchemist, tailor, butcher, baker, candlestick maker...
