EctoComp 2012
Re: EctoComp 2012
I'm going to try to enter this comp. I'll be using Inform since that's what I know. I can't promise a result because I'll have to fight every perfectionist instinct I have to produce a speed IF. I rarely play speed IFs because their roughness usually bugs me too much. But for the record, I've liked Adrift Speed IFs better than those from other platforms. It may be a function of the kind of horror and funny games that Adrift has produced for Ectocomp etc., which seems to suit the format, and also appeals to my taste. Anyway I'm not going to cheat, but I will plan the bejeesus out of this game so that if I get it done, it will at least meet some kind of minimum standard I set for myself!

Re: EctoComp 2012
I just managed to get my entry in, a little late but hopefully it'll still count. Inspired by recent Hollywood remakes/reimaginings/pointless recreations of horror movies like The Thing, The Omen and Carrie, I decided to make The Evil Chicken of Doom 3D, a terrifying modernization of the original game designed to scare a new generation of players all over again. And obviously, because it's a remake, it's in 3D.
Re: EctoComp 2012
Very interesting.. I've just visiteed the IntFiction.org and there are 6 entries for this years EctoComp:
Mel Stefaniuk
Hulk Handsome
DCBSupafly
Wade Clarke and
Carolyn VanEseltine
Taleslinger
It's good to see such an interest, but how many are Adrift games?

An ADRIFT comp with more non-ADRIFT games than ADRIFT ones... Interesting.

Re: EctoComp 2012
Maybe once I learn Adrift I'll try a contest over here in Adrift.
By the way, is it kosher to print my impressions of the game here, or in another thread, or should I just send them to JJ Guest and he will take care of the rest and print everyone's views afterwards? I had fun playing through them all. I'd like to give as much as possible without spoiling things.

Re: EctoComp 2012
Are the Adrift games in Adrift 5? I ask because I've been unable to run either of them on my mac. I tried opening the .taf files in Spatterlight (old but usually works for Adrift 4 games) and in Gargoyle (up to date, presumably with Adrift 4). Both said "Glk SCARE Error - Unable to load an Adrift game from the requested file."
I did encounter one Adrift game I couldn't run at all back in 2010. I think it was All Hallow's Eve or of similar title.

All ADRIFT 5 games can be played online at http://play.adrift.org.uk/?game=http:// ... ofgame.taf, obviously substituting addressofgame with the location the game can be found online.

Re: EctoComp 2012
I put the adrift ectocomp entries on my own webspace so I could play them. In case anyone is in the same boat as me (mac only) or wants to play the Adrift Ectocomp entries online anyway, here are the addresses. So these won't be up here forever, but will certainly be up for the duration of the comp or until the games get official addresses:
Evil Chicken of Doom 3D:
http://play.adrift.org.uk/?game=http:// ... ECOD3D.taf
Beythilda the Night Witch:
http://play.adrift.org.uk/?game=http:// ... _Witch.taf

Re: EctoComp 2012
I'm surprised that, in Evil Chicken of Doom
Spoiler
Kill Chicken only works once, but doesn't work at all if you have the axe. Kill Chicken with Axe doesn't work. Chop Chicken doesn't work. Attack Chicken doesn't work. I gave up after that.

Re: EctoComp 2012
Ectocomp was opened up to non-Adrift games last year under Duncan Bowsman's administration - it is now officially for all platforms, which is why I've been running it from http://www.intfiction.org/forum/ instead of here. Sorry for any confusion!

Re: EctoComp 2012
I didn't finish the game as much as I ran out of time so I didn't have a chance to go through and fix problems like this. I played through it twice to the end before I sent it off, so it is physically possible to beat it, but that was the full extent of the fix-up work I could fit in the three hours. I'll address all these mistakes when I remake the game in another 10 years.Campbell wrote:I'm surprised that, in Evil Chicken of DoomSpoiler
