Re: ParserComp 2021 announced, held this summer

Post by P/o Prune »

Parser comp, sound like something that would be worth signing up for. Like Lumin, I have nothing to show for this year but I'm seriously thinking about holding back Oct.31st and then enter it next year (if the comp runs.)

Good to know: Unlike IFComp, there is no lower limit on how few games you must rate So if you only feel like playing and rating one or two games, you can just do that.

You still have 10 days to rate some or all the games. There is no lower limit on how few you can rate and there are several good entries. You give 1-5 stars to any game you like.

The number of days left is shown here: https://itch.io/jam/parsercomp-2021

And the list of games and current number of ratings can be found here: https://itch.io/jam/parsercomp-2021/unrated

    The results are up:
    https://itch.io/jam/parsercomp-2021/results

There were a lot of good games there. :D

The rules are very much like IFComp, though you give 1-5 stars instead of 1-10 points. There is one major difference: In ParserComp, because it was held on itch.io, games that were played and rated by less than 20 people (20 was the median) were penalized ("minus-points"). The fewer people who played your game, the bigger the penalty. This problem was most pronounced for the game "The Arkham Abomination" which placed 14th place (out of 18) but without the penalty, it would have placed 6th, so a huge change in placement due to this penalty.

I am glad that IFComp does not apply such penalties, as IFComp only uses the raw scores. But unfortunately, on itch.io, penalized scores are used for ranking instead of the raw scores. So if you plan to enter in ParserComp next year, you should be aware of this, as it gives Windows-only games a disadvantage. I'm sure Frankendrift will be improved, which will help, but it is a big disadvantage, that the online Runner still isn't working. Thus, fewer players and bigger penalties to ADRIFT games.

That's the first negative thing I've heard about the comp and it is very disappointing that they're penalising games like this. It's something authors have no control over. I didn't enter the comp even though I would like to but if this penalising remains in place, it would seriously make me think twice about entering it in the future.

Actually, the more I think about it, the less it makes sense. As the penalty is based on the median number of ratings, your penalty will increase if less games get few ratings. So the penalty not just depend on your raw score and how few votes you have but also what type of games that participate. So roughly speaking, the less Windows-only games that participate, the bigger the median and thus the penalty. So if they manage to scare some of the Windows-only entries away, those left will get an even higher penalty.

Congrats with the 12th place. :thanks:
Not bad considering your game was a two word only parser game.

I should mention both pros and cons, not just cons. A great thing about ParserComp 2021 was, that you are given marks in many different categories. This is a nice sort of feedback, as you can see what people on average like and dislike about your game. You are also told how many people rated your game.

For instance, here are my "marks":

    Code: Select all

    Criteria Rank	Score*	Raw Score
    Help, Hints and/or Instructions #7	3.522	3.938
    Implementation #10	3.075	3.438
    Puzzles #10	3.019	3.375
    Story (Plot, Setting & Objective) #11	2.907	3.250
    Presentation (Text, Graphics & Sound) #12	3.075	3.438
    Overall Rating #12	3.019	3.375
    Writing (General Quality) #14	2.907	3.250
